About the data
Every call in this report is an unconfirmed MNPD dispatch report, shown as MNPD publishes it. A call is a report of activity, not a confirmed crime, an outcome or a measure of safety. Volume reflects reporting, visitors, land use, policing and collection coverage, and is not adjusted for population.
Each call is counted once, by the Central Time it was received. When MNPD corrects a call’s address, only the corrected version is counted. Calls held for review or removed are excluded. Each call’s type is MNPD’s latest when the report was generated. Calls missed while our collector was down can’t be recovered from the live feed.
Priority calls are the few codes MNPD treats as the most urgent, which Nashville311 posts to X as soon as they’re reported: Aircraft Crash, Bank Robbery, Barricaded Suspect, Bomb Threat, Personnel in Serious Danger / Possible Officer Down, Prisoner Escape, Reported Explosion, Riot / Disorderly Crowd, Shooting, Sniper, Train Derailment. Priority comes from the code assigned when the call was dispatched, not from what officers found. Precinct is the MNPD precinct whose boundary contains the call’s mapped location. MNPD’s feed does not say which precinct handled a call. Each call’s area is the name MNPD’s feed gives for where it happened: a neighborhood or city, or a precinct where it names neither.
Map points are the Metro GIS or TDOT location for the address MNPD published, not verified incident sites. Call labels show the location as MNPD published it. Calls we can’t place still count in every total and appear in the call list.
Stories in the news are from Nashville newsrooms, linked to a call when their place and time match it and a check of the details agrees. Each links out, as published.
Calls are collected every minute. Coverage is the share of minutes with a successful collection, not proof that every call was captured. Month-over-month changes appear only when both months have at least 95% coverage. Zero means no stored calls, not an absence of activity.
